About Bourbon
Bourbon is the most famous of the Bourbon-descended varieties. The World Coffee Research Organization even refers to it as “one of the most culturally and genetically important varieties in the world”. Bourbon varietal is a tall, low to medium yielding plant with green leaf tips that has the potential to produce a good quality coffee at high altitudes. It’s characterized by its susceptibility to major diseases, though it produces an excellent cup of coffee. These characteristics require great care and time taken by producers, roasters, and baristas. Bourbon was first cultivated in Yemen, then spread by Dutch and French migrants to Ile Bourbon, off Madagascar's coast, and then across Africa and the Americas. Natural and anaerobic processed Bourbons thrive in dry harvest climates, such as the Darmli estate, as the sugars won’t get washed away by rain. Brew method is incredibly important for extracting the best qualities of this variety– pour over and French press will best bring out the sweetness, complexity, and the silky, creamy body.
